Designed by Argyll Maritime Design Services the vessel has an overall length of 17. 25m, with a beam of 6.5m and draught aft on 1.4m on a 56 tonnes lightship displacement.

The Cromarty Queen was built to MCA Class 5 for up to 50 pax and four cars in C class waters. But she was also completed to work-boat code Cat 2 (12 passengers) to operate 20 miles offshore. For this role she has reinforced steelwork in place for the addition of a 17-tonne hydraulic crane, enabling her suitable for supply services to offshore platforms.

Central to her role as a car and passenger ferry is an innovative turntable arrangement built into the rear portion of the forward deck area which allows cars or similar sized vehicles to be driven onboard and turned ready for discharge over the bow ramp.
