Health and Safety

We endeavour to promote a strong health and safety culture within SMS that is well documented and implemented through our integrated management system which we are working towards ISO 45001:2018 certification for.  

We monitor and measure our health and safety performance, striving for continuous improvement and the elimination of accidents and incidents in the workplace. We seek to learn and always improve so that violations and errors are prevented and never repeated. 

Our commitment to health and safety is clear, from our health and safety policy through to our dedicated SHE support team, we want our people to work safely and go home free from harm at the end of their shift. Our ethos is simple, if a task cannot be completed safely, then it shall not be completed until such a time that it can.

The Environment

Working on and near the seas means we are all too aware of the impact that globalisation is having on our planet. It drives us to actively look at reducing the environmental and sustainability impact of our operations.

Our environmental commitment and beliefs are augmented through our environmental policy and integrated management system that we are working towards ISO 14001:2015 certification for. 

The principle ways in which we are trying to better serve the environment are through a reduction in energy and resource wastage, through better waste management and recycling practises and lastly through pollution prevention and control.
 

Quality Assurance

Being an engineering business, quality assurance is important to us and important to our customers, it greatly affects our ability to ensure on-time and on-budget service provision. Our high standards of quality assurance are key to retaining our loyal customer base and also key to providing new customers with the confidence they need in SMS.   

We actively record and investigate all identified quality non-conformances so that we can understand the root causes and implement appropriate corrective measures to prevent recurrence.   

Our desire for continuous improvement is driven through our quality policy and integrated management system that is ISO 9001:2015 certified by the UKAS accredited British Assessment Bureau. Additionally, our fabrication manufacturing is carried out in accordance with our EN1090 (ExC2) factory production control system, for which we are working towards BSI certification for.

At SMS, we acknowledge our responsibilities towards wider society, the industry within which we operate and to our stakeholders to ensure we leave the smallest possible footprint. We do this by continually managing and improving our business performance in all areas.

Any conduct that is illegal or may bring us into disrepute is encouraged to be reported in accordance with our whistle blowing policy.

Insurance

We recognise that when working with high value assets in a heavy engineering environment, there comes an unavoidable level of risk and potential liability. That’s why we have comprehensive insurance policies in place to ensure that collectively our works and your asset have the best afforded level of protection in place.   

Our policies are regularly reviewed and adjusted to ensure that we’ve covered all eventualities. 

We hold a comprehensive ship repairers liabililty policy with cover of £10m GBP, employers liability policy with cover of £10m GBP, professional indemnity policy with cover of £5m GBP and lastly a contractors all risks policy with cover of £0.5m GBP. Click here for our policy details.
